Prime Minister Modi to open virtual Bengaluru Tech Summit on November 19

Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open Karnataka‘s flagship tech event, the Bengaluru Technological Summit-2020 (BTS-2020) on November 19.

The event will be held virtually for the first time, and the response from industry and experts has been overwhelming, deputy chief minister CN Ashwath Narayan, who also holds the IT portfolio, said on Wednesday.

The central theme of the four day event, he said, ‘NEXT IS NOW’ highlighting the significance of advancing the future at the accelerated pace and the need for preparedness by using innovations and technological interventions.
This is the 23rd edition of the BTS event.

The 22nd edition of the event held last November had participation from 21 countries with 253 international delegations, 44 sessions, 262 speakers and 12,350 visitors.

This time the response has surpassed last year’s, Narayan told a media conference. Modi, he said, has been stressing on the larger use of science and technology to better delivery of services.

The state government, Narayan said, had decided to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Centre in collaboration with IISc, Bengaluru. The government has taken this decision by realizing the importance of the potential of AI in finding solutions to the problems of the future, he said.

About 60% of the people of Karnataka were dependent on the farm sector for their livelihood. While, on one hand, the economy is growing, the contribution from the agri sector is falling. This has become a matter of serious concern.

The contribution from the agri sector to the State GDP is just 16%, at present. This needs to be increased to at least 30% in the next five years. Only then can they prevent migration of people to cities from villages.

The research and developments in the field of bio-technology will make a huge impact on agriculture and health care. This should be leveraged for value addition to agriculture produce, processing and other beneficial processes.

At the same time, the quality healthcare system needs to be established by the application of these innovations, he said.
Additional chief secretary (IT, BT & Science & Technology) EV Ramana Reddy said the event this yearwill showcase the best innovations of not only Karnataka, but also the nation and the world.

“Through BTS, we hope to continue to engage with stakeholders at a global level, through exchange of people and ideas, so that Karnataka may consistently maintain its lead position in innovation, science and technology,” he said.

“More than ever, industry needs to network and strategize on the emerging technologies as well as the opportunities arising in the new normal. IT industry is a bright spot during this Covid crisis and BTS gives the industry an ideal platform to showcase its new solutions,” Karnataka IT Visions Group chairman S Kris Gopalakrishnan said.

Bio-technology vision group head Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said, ““Covid19 has rendered BTS 2020 into a virtual event. This has compelled us to choreograph a program that features the best of global minds in technology. AI and Big Data are at the heart of our Biotech sessions. We have curated sessions that focus on cutting edge advances in the combined field of biological and computational sciences encompassing CRISPR-Cas9, genomics, regenerative biology etc. BTS 2020 has turned an adversity into a very exciting global event catering to every stakeholder of the tech economy.”

Karnataka startup vision group chairman Prashant Prakash said: “Bengaluru has long been home to the most vibrant startup ecosystems in India, producing more than 14 unicorns and attracting nearly 47% of venture investments in the last 4 years. As India recovers from the crippling effects of the pandemic on the economy, several Bengaluru based startups have accelerated India’s transition to an internet first economy, driving digital disruption across legacy sectors.”

Bengaluru Tech Summit IT conference committee chairman Jitendra Chaddah said: “Bengaluru is a key IT destination not only for India but for the world, and Bengaluru Tech Summit is a flagship technology event for the industry. It brings global thought leaders and tech experts together on one platform to address some of our biggest challenges and opportunities today. This is especially important in the context of the new normal, where I believe technology plays a vital role in keeping our businesses and lives moving forward.”
